The launch ceremony will be held on November 17, 2010, starting at 10:30 AM PT. The location will be the World Forestry Center, 4033 SW Canyon Road, Portland, Oregon. Attending the ceremony will be US Mint Deputy Director Andrew Brunhart. Other attendees have not yet been announced.

Following the ceremony will be a popular coin exchange where collectors can purchase $10 rolls of the new Mount Hood Quarters at face value. The day before the ceremony, there will be a coin collector forum held.

Any series would have been tough to live up to the popularity of the State Quarters Program. The new series featuring parks and sites has been making a valiant effort with some interesting designs and attractively low mintages.

A few decades from now will the State Quarters or the Park Quarters be more valuable?

One Ounce 2010 Proof Gold Eagle Sold Out

Less than one month after the initial release, the one ounce individual option for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagle has sold out. The maximum production limit was established at 25,000 coins.

Since the issue price of the coins was a hefty $1,585 each, that means this product accounted for $39,625,000 worth of sales for the United States Mint. Using an intrinsic value of $1,350 per ounce of gold, this amount includes a premium of $5,875,000.

The US Mint has issued Proof Gold Eagles for collectors each year except for 2009. Sales for 2008 were at relatively low levels, with the individual one ounce option recording sales of 17,720 during nearly a year of availability. Perhaps absence does make the heart grow fonder, as collectors very quickly scooped up the entire maximum for this year.

Record prices for gold may have also added to the allure. Although logically we would like to buy low and sell high. In practice, rising prices seem to incite more purchases than falling prices.

Lincoln Presidential Dollar Release Ceremony

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollar is one of the more anticipated releases of the series honoring the former Presidents of the United States. Collectors have been eagerly awaiting the November 18 circulation release date.

To mark the occasion, the US Mint will also hold a launch ceremony at President Lincoln’s Cottage on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. The ceremony will be held starting at 10:00 AM ET. Lincoln lived at this location for one quarter of his Presidency including the time when he drafted the Emancipation Proclamation. He last visited the cottage the day before his assassination.

Past ceremonies for Lincoln related coins have been widely attended by the public. One of the launches for the 2009 Lincoln Cent was called “Woodstock for coin collectors.”

The 2010 Lincoln Dollar will feature a portrait of the 16th President by Don Everhart with inscriptions indicating his name, order of the Presidency, years of the term, and “In God We Trust”. The reverse, also designed by Everhart, features the Statue of Liberty and inscription “United States of America”.
